  13. Oh insomnia...I know all about that at my house. I had it last night. I guess it didn't help that the baby was teething and crying a fair bit.
    Names I like:

    Lila
    Nina
    Flora
    Elisabeth
    Margaret

  17. Here, I'll lend you my daughters' names. :-)

    Jane
Susanna (one traditional nickname I LOVE for this is Sukey, but our Susanna's nickname is Zuzu)
    Ellen

One thing I love about these names is that they're beautiful, familiar and classic but not used much. None of them is anywhere near the top 300 most used baby names: http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/popularnames.cgi

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh, also I love Esme. And I love the story that introduced me to the name when I was young: For Esme, With Love and Squalor, by J.D. Salinger.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh, yes! Ivy? Poppy? We're huge fans of Charlotte and Violet here in the Crowe house...maybe I need to have another baby... ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  20. claire. that is what mine will be named when she ever arrives.

  22. Georgianna (Gigi)
    Gretl
    Valora

These are all names I love but my husband has vetoed.

  24. Clementine. Carmen. Eloise. Louisa. Ainsley. Ramona. Gretel. Hazel.

  26. you;ve got a good list going. here are a few more: cora, opal, lily, gabriella, simone, violet, edie. have fun!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Names I love but can't use for one reason or another:

    Ellen
    Linnea
    Rosemary
    June

    ReplyDelete
  28. Dorothy
    Lorraine
    Choltilde

But my real advice, go check the SS Index of top 100 names. Don't pick anything in the top 25. Then ignore 25-50. 51-100, there's where you pick from. Anything past 100 eh...probably not. And use the most common spelling. ALWAYS. Uncommon spellings do make the name "special". It makes the kid look like they have parents that don't know how to spell. Oh, and name your child for the woman she will become, not the baby she is.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I wanted to call my first daughter Olive but couldn't convince my husband and she got Sophia instead. Don't get me wrong, I love the name Sophia too but my love for Olive just simply wouldn't fade. 3 years later I had worn him down sufficiently that he relented and we welcomed Olive Coco. Hooray!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wow, you've gotten some GREAT names here - makes me want to adopt something so I can name it. Here are a couple that I didn't see, but maybe missed: Tallulah, which I love, but couldn't sell my husband on, and Clover, which I did sell him on. And she's perfect, so I know its a good name.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Someone asked how to pronounce Isla. It is pronounced eye-la. Isn't it beautiful?

    ReplyDelete

  38. There are some fantastic names here - actually some that belong to my own daughters who are:

  48. Oh yes, another one. We go to church with a family that named their little one Gemma. Isn't that adorable? These little girls are such "gems", I thought it was so fitting. She and her husband served a mission Russia, I think that is where she first laid ears on it. :)

  71. I can really only suggest my daughters name, Amelia Eve (Milly for short). Beautiful, classic, timeless.

    ReplyDelete
  72. A third vote for Willa. Love Willa Cather's books. Also, I once met the most graceful French woman named Ghislaine. I've always loved that name, though it never quite worked for our situation. I also loved the name Kajsa (Swedish), but alas, have gone with more traditional American names for my own kids. Goodluck!

    ReplyDelete
  73. My daughter's name is Juliette Sabine.

    Good luck! Ann

    ReplyDelete
  74. What great suggestions! Here are some more;

Stella Rose (our very own 'Minnie')
    Alice
    Matilda Ruby (my fav neice)
    Florence
    Flora
    Freya
    Edie
    Millie
    Genevieve
    Elsa
    Frederika

I love "F" names but we have a really diffcult F (German) surname so they just can't work for us.

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I've always liked growing up as a Tobi.
    ;)

    ReplyDelete
  76. a friend's grandmother's name is interestingly named "novella lilly" (southerner).

    "allegra"

i know someone named "pleasants" (lovely person, fits her name beautifully, another southerner)

  77. The joy of dreaming a name for a promised new little person!!!

My favourite is Willa - meaning desired, or longed for

    Also love
    Elsbeth
    Sadie
    Louisa
    Clementine
    Adelaide

and Madeaux (mah'doh) french nickname for Madeleine

    ReplyDelete
  78. Georgianna and Lizzie. My two favorite names from Jane Austen's works. And I'm sure whatever name you decide upon will be perfect for your wee one.

    ReplyDelete
  79. My daughter is Penelope. I like the story of Penelope from the Odyssey....too long to write it here, but basically she's known for being clever as well as for her faithfulness. And it happens to fit our daughter perfectly. Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Partial to my girls' names

    Morgan
    Elisabeth "Ella"
    Margaret
    Frances

    ReplyDelete
  81. Georgie or
    Georgianna (pronounced geor-jane-uh)

like in the movie The Dutchess! Our Daughers name is Georgie, we call her Gigi or G and I fall more in love with it every day. For a moment I wished I'd named her Georgianna (after watching The Dutchess) but Georgie is a family name. Happy searching!

    ReplyDelete
  82. I love the names Esmé, Wren, Camille, Luna, Seraphina and Penelope.

I have to second Missy Anns comment about naming your child for them woman she will become, not the baby she is, after all, you do hope that she will one day grow up to become a strong, independant woman (or any other qualities you'd like her to have, these were my preferences).

I would bevare of the name Michel that someone suggested, it's a traditional mans name in big parts of the world. I also dislike naming girls names that end in "-son", maybe because my mother tongue is Swedish, but Mason means "Marks son" and I don't really see it fitting for a girl or a woman, the same goes for Adams son (Addison) and Anders/Andrews son (Anderson). Anyway, I think You are going to choose a lovely and fitting name for your little girl (which she will be even 50 years from now), these tree objections are just something that keeps bugging me every time I see names being discussed on the Internet, and I had to let it out :-)

    ReplyDelete
  83. My daughter's name is Isla May (we just started calling her May May and she loves it.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Hi Lynne. Wow 95 comments.

Abby has 2 friends with adorable names in her class Ivy and Lola. Lola might compete with Lily a little though.

I love that Ethan came up with the name Tiffany:)

Hi there! I discovered your blog from your Black Apple doll template, which I am planning to make for my little one, her name is very special to me, she was named when I was 10 years old, and I had her when I was 25. I loved Anne of Greene Gables, which is where I got it. Her name is Avonlea Patricia. Avy for short, her first name is pronounced a-von-lee. Not like Avon, but with a short a. Other names we were considering were Willa, which seems to be getting pretty popular, Paisley, Gemma Sue, Greer, Paige, and Ila or Isla. My little sisters are Brantley Claire, Aubrey Kai, and Presley Grace (after, you guessed it, Elvis). I also love Stella. Congrats on your little girl! There is something so amazing about a mom and her girl! Good Luck.

  86. You don't need more help.

    Nonetheless:

Mary (my daughter, who is often May)
    Louisa
    Eve

    Congratulations to you.

  87. Just found your lovely blog, read through all 100 posts and saw none of my girl's name

    Lauren

It is a great name and not very common here. Much luck and congrats!

    ReplyDelete
  88. I have Jessica, Sophie, Rose, Molly and Lily. Only managed two flower names. If I was the only one choosing they would have been, Violet, Poppy, Rose, Daisy and Lily. There are so many lovely girls names. I love Clover and Matilda as well.

  89. I just found your blog through . . . I have no idea. I've been all over blogland tonight! Anyway, I hope I'm not too late to jump in with baby name suggestions. I have three daughters (and three sons too, but that's not what you're interested in). I get tons of compliments on their names:

    India Jane
    Arabella Claire
    Adelaide Amelia

(Adelaide was named Clementine for one week, but we got so much crap for that name. Everybody made fun of it. Everybody! So we officially changed it and usually call her Ada for short. Addie is getting to be very common.)

    ReplyDelete
  90. Don't know if your still looking for names, but my daghter who is 6 months old is called Tekla, it was quite common for girls in Sweden about 100 years ago to be named Tekla, not so common anymore. It's a grecian name, meaning "divine fame".
Rut Agnes Tekla is her full name.

  91. well, what about Haley? or maybe Christine? I have a neighbor whose pregnant with a baby girl as well, and they're planning on the name Avery. Hope this helps! Congratulations :)
