servant dress, revisited

It's finally getting a little chilly here in California which makes my heart so, so happy. Definitely time to make some new fall dresses. So, I've discovered that the servant dress is highly adaptable: the fold-over style of it is simple enough that it's pretty easy to experiment and with a couple of pleats and a ruffled collar, come up with a dress that is entirely different.

Unfortunately the five year old does not like to be still for photographs (the subliminal servitude message STILL hasn't taken).

But you get the picture. (For any of you who have the servant dress pattern and might be interested in making this variation, I'm going to put instructions in a file (hopefully in the next couple of days) in a sidebar on the blog, so you'll be able to hopefully click and print out.)

the five year old is always so cute in her inability to stay still! but i think eventually the dress's message will sink in when she is a teenager. well, now that i think about it, maybe not. when she is a mother, that is when it will sink in. aren't we all servants to our cute, loveable masters?!!

It is always fun to look at the shots afterward and you feel so lucky when you get one with their entire body in the frame. I love the collar! I want one, I will stay still for the picture.

The five year old is a lucky girl to have such a stylish dress...even if the subliminal factor hasn't rubbed off on her.

Hi, I came across your blog and had so much fun reading all the older posts and looking at all the beautiful sewing you both do. I use to sew non stop for my girls when they were young and dreamed of doing what you guys are doing. I now sew for my youngest daughter, who is 18,and loves unique things. I also love to do embroidery as well.
This is for Lynne... I think we may live in the same town :) One of your photos showed a bit of the town I live in and I was surprised to see a certain signage from the Plaza ;)

I love the style of the dresses you make. I watched Pride and Prejudice last night and LOVED all the dresses and styles and they reminded me of the frocks and servant dresses I have seen here, with a modern twist. And I especially love brown, good choice.

I am so glad I bought the servant dress pattern. I have made two so far. I love how quickly they sew up and how easy they are to modify. Your latest variation is really cool, I hope you decide to post a how-to for that soon!

i have a feeling we have the same sort of fall weather...if we get a 70 degree day, it's considered chilly.
