Mary Cassatt inspiration

I love Mary Cassatt. When I was growing up my mom had several prints of her paintings around our house, and we'd go into the city to see her paintings at the National Gallery often. They feel like old friends to me. Recently I was looking through a book I have and came across this gorgeous silvertint, on the top. Brilliant, isn't it? And very modern, I think. I love everything about it: the perspective, the composition, the way she let a little color creep in to the picture, and most of all that connection between the squirmy child and the mother. Inspired by Miss Cassatt I've been trying to make my own mother-child drawing to paint (that's me on the bottom, in my pj's). I've been working on my little sketch off and on, and decided to post about it today to hopefully motivate me to work a little harder... maybe one day it will make it's way onto a canvas.

Oh my goodness, your sketch is so amazing! I love the simple lines and the gentle position of you and baby. Mary Cassatt's is surprisingly modern. Are you going to paint yours with only one or two colors like she did? That would be so beautiful!

Thank you, Melissa! I was thinking of totally trying to imitate the way Mary Cassatt colored hers -- just a couple of colors...

Lynne, I love it. I am excited to see the final product. Another creation that will be even more meaningful with the passage of time.

Lynne,

You are so talented. My mom paints too and she used to do portraits of us when we were kids. I've never been able to make my hand recreate what I see with my eyes. You're lucky to have such a gift.

Mary Cassatt is my favorite artist! I love her Motherly work ....wrapped myself around everything Cassatt and studied her after the birth of my son. I love your drawing, it is a fabulous interpretation, so soft so sweet capturing the Motherly work. I look forward to visiting back to see more. Thanks for sharing, makes me want to hang the prints I have.
P.S. LOVE that orange dress, it is so much more than the first one...how great is that that you found on Etsy ....give you energy.

So talented. It really looks like you. I should've had you do the one of E. in our living room instead of going all the way to Montmartre.
