decorating with the force

I rarely seem to write about my son, mainly because I don't do much sewing for him (by his request :) ). But since we repainted his room from traffic-cone orange (which was his favorite color for 3 long years) to this nice gray, we've been having lots of fun getting his room together. My mother-in-law, who is an AMAZING seamstress, made this most cozy of flannel quilts for his bed. How lucky are we? I love it. It is so amazingly comfy to snuggle up in the blanket.

The second picture is the project E and I worked on this weekend. It's the Death Star, made out of a styrofoam ball, strung up along with some star wars lego creations and a Bobo Fett action figure (he wears a jet pack, in case some of you are wondering how he is able to fly without a ship). The original plan, which would have been perhaps more "artistic," was to make a bunch of Tie fighters out of black construction paper, swarming around the styrofoam death star. (Have any of you ever googled "star wars ships" and "origami"? It is shocking how many people out there are skilled at such things). We quickly discovered that Star Wars origami is harder than it looks, and went to plan B, stringing up toys we already had.

The last piece of the room that we are working on: window coverings. I've rejected the 7 year old's suggestion, star wars curtains, and am trying to figure out something without strangly cords or that's too expensive. Any brilliant ideas out there?

Hi! Just found your blog via wee wonderfuls. Love it ALL! Struggled with big boy rooms myself. You could do a fixed roll-up shade (attach curtain to a wooden strip screwed inside frame; 2 canvas straps, folded in half stapled over wood; and a little pocket at bottom for a small wooden dowel to keep it neat). Do a 2-sided shade to make everyone happy: room-facing side will be star wars print (maybe a vintage sheet) - son gets to see this at night when he goes to sleep. Outside-facing fabric will be a solid color (say, green of the map). When rolled up during the day w straps, you'll just see a bit of pattern on the roll!

I would love to go snuggle up in that deliciously beautiful flannel quilt. You lucky lady to have your mother-in-law make it for you! I love the whole room too: the map, the fantastic Star Wars mobile, the pillow cases. I'm so glad you shared some photos with us. Annmarie had some good rollershade suggestions. You can also buy the Target roller shade kit and replace the plastic shade that comes with it, with some pretty fabric. I think a pretty heavy woven linen would look fabulous. You simply sew the sides and bottom, then duct tape the top of the fabric onto the roller shade tube. I can't wait to see more of your amazing creations!

love your blog, and it's a great room already! could you freezer paper or applique some full body darth vader or yoda silhouettes on plain background? just a thought... and word to my fellow star wars fan!

I absolutely love that quilt.

As far as window coverings, I'm planning to do something for my son's room where I put up pegs on each corner of the window, and just have one panel covering the entire surface of the window, with loops at the corners around each of the pegs to hold it on. There would also be a loop halfway up on each side, so that I could fold up the panel and hang the bottom loop on the top peg, and then fold again so the middle loop was on the top peg also, so there would just be a little valance at the top when I wanted the curtain open. Does that make any sense? I'm excited about that idea because I can use that panel as sort of a mural, with whatever applique, etc, that I decide on. You could do maybe a space/planets/stars scene on it, and it would be a combo window covering/artpiece.

Let me know if you want that explained in a different way, or a sketch so that it makes sense! I love the idea and hope it helps.

Really love your blog! I have one kiddo, a boy, and what he requests/ what we sew together is so different from what I always dreamed I would sew for a daughter! LOL! For window coverings, how about dark denim or navy blue twill curtains with some glow-in-the-dark thread stars randomly stitched on them (five-pointed stars if you have a fancy embroidery machine, or star-like blobs using whatever embroidery stitches are on your machine)?

Adorable room. Tell E. cousin E. likes it, especially the map. For the windows you could try a white sheer curtain with a simple pattern or none at all. We have really pretty sheers with flowers from Pottery Barn in the girls room - they keep the room light but give the girls privacy. I will look and email you some more suggestions.

Ohhhh I love some of the ideas the ladies have come up with - with my boys we have roman blinds - but they dont keep the heat in during winter so then I put up some blocked out honeycomb type blinds - plain and simple and keep the warmth in... but not cheap but we have a life time warranty which has already been used for the kitchen ones!

i think you should do honeycomb shades and then do valances in that great fabric you showed me from purl. the honeycomb shades let some light in - or you could get blackout shades too. those are nice. you can also get them w/ the top coming down. PLUS - rob can get you a great deal! ;)

Star Wars is a huge hit here. When I asked my boy how he wanted his room decorated when we moved to the new house, he had the whole thing worked out including black walls with stars, tie fighter bed, Death Star light, Storm Troopers etc. etc. It was quite elaborate. Somehow, he settled for lots and lots of pictures of troopers on this door. Anyway....I have had this tutorial maked for a looooong time for my boys rooms curtains. Looks like you have gotten similar ideas for them. http://twostraightlines.typepad.com/two_straight_lines/2006/10/tutorial_simple.html

Have fun and I am excited to see what you have come up with!

Love this room. Big boys are so hard to decorate for and you have done such a great job! Bet he loves it.

My son is nearly 14 years and his room is still full of Lego, Mega Bloks Dragons, and Star Wars bits and pieces (a challenge to vacuum!). His window treatments are fairly plain (cedar venetian blinds), but I have used denim to make placemats for his tall boy and bedside table. I have also made a jumbo sized floor cushion with a denim border, and patches made of co-ordinating fabrics to his quilt, so that he has a comfortable spot when working on the floor on his elaborate construction activities.

I vote for Star Wars curtains. In fact, I may even make and send some--to get you back for the High School Musical poster now proudly displayed in our toy room.

stich some dish towels together and hang them on pegs..
i think it will go great with the quilt, and if your son is anything like mine he will want to change it again soon.
also you might find some dishtowels with maps on them..
hope its not to strange an idea..

Lynne, check out this link...you might find it inspiring. It is my favorite boys room and reflects elements you've already thought of as well.

I love your project with your son. Sometimes getting crafty with sons takes you to unexpected places. Never saw myself making a duct tape sword but here I am! Tracey
