1st grade drawing-portrait-day
Some days I am very lucky and get to go do art with my son's first grade class. I love watching kids make things. They always deliver, don't they? Today I showed them some great portraits - one by Albrecht Durer, amazingly realistic, and one by Modigliani - abstract and expressive. After a few little tips on technique, proportion, and blah blah blah, I made my son's fabulous teacher sit in the front of the class and be our model.
Then this afternoon I stole a quick hour during the baby's nap time to put the drawings together into a book for the teacher, an idea I read about here.
(My novice book-stitching is really bad, but it's the thought that counts, right?)

What a great and thoughtful gift! I'm sure she will cherish it forever.

Ha,ha,ha. I'm almost falling off my chair laughing at those faces. Boy the teacher looks hangry (happy+angry) in that first drawing!
I miss seeing little kid drawings. They're so creative!
That is such a lovelyidea and thing to do.
Great idea!!!
That would also be a fun family activity sometime.
i'm with you melissa...that first picture is totally cracking me up! i love kid art...so pure and awesome + brilliant book idea.
LOVE this idea. What a great gift. Little children are such naturals when it comes to artwork!
Thanks for sharing:)
Love the pictures. I'm sure the teacher will love it! I sure do.
I was just thinking. This would make a fabulous granmother gift. Maybe for mother's day? What do you think?
Lynne -
That is absolutely the cutest Teacher Gift EVER!!!!
However, I noted that you did fail to say which drawing was the best likeness... LOL! :-)
that is really georgous, i would love to know how you conducted this class, the blah blah bits you left out, its such a great idea.
OOPS! here is my post-->
really..as a 1st grade teacher I can say she will be touched by the book!! I save little things each year from my students to remember that year, this would surely be one!
What a great idea too for Mother's day as Melissa had said.
thanks for sharing the kids portraits =)
I won't be surprised if this is the best gift this teacher has ever received from her students (and one parent)! Looks awesome.
She will LOVE it!!!!
oh, i love the idea of a mother's day book! or grandmother book, or father book... it would also be pretty to mount pictures of your children's art, and in between each art page put a translucent paper to protect the art. especially if you used book fabric on the outer cover. endless possibilities!
This is sooo great! I love what you wrote on the front cover! I think First Grade drawings will always be my favorite because they are less concerned with realism and more interested in showing how they feel about their subject matter! Do you do art with them often?
the day you gave this to her had to be one of the happiest days of her teacher-life.
so great idea, whata lucky teacher!
I LOVE children's self-portraits! The pictures are so telling!
You have a wonderful site!
That is too funny! Children are such artists... it is so natural for them. I wish my students did that for me when I was a teacher, it will be most treasured!
What a great gift Lynne! She will LOVE it. Thoughtful gifts like that are always appreciated. I still can't believe you whipped up a homemade book in an hour. Wait, yes, I can believe it...you're amazing!
The lucky teacher has not only your dear boy but also the best mom a teacher could have.
As a former teacher, I want to say - good job lady! What a thoughtful gift! Giving her a few minutes to sit down is pretty fabulous on its own, but the book is so much fun!
In the 50s of 20th century, with its smart tailored shape the hermes handbag evolved into one of the favorite accessories of many famous people and had enjoyed an iconic status ever since.
