the Buddha baby

Here is Margot at three months. We've started calling her "Buddha baby". Sometimes we call her "Marguerite" or "Margarita" or "la petite Margot". When my son was a baby we called him "BouBou," the five-year old we called "Beffy", and the three-year old "JuJu". Names can morph into such bizarre creations. What funny nicknames does your family have?

P.S. the Buddha is wearing her handknit sweater by Lynne and booties by cousin Allyson.

I've called my kids Peaches, Little Lady, and Noodle. I don't know where those names came from, they seem more appropriate for dogs than kids. Also, the baby is sometimes referred to a the Banshee for obvious reasons.

what a darling!
I call my son the bug shortened from the hug-a-bug and my daughter is the bunny, from Annie-bunnie.

DD#1 is The Bean, or just Bean.
DD#2 is Immi, or Sweet Pea.
DD#3 is Egg but in secret I've also been calling her Deedee.

And I call all of them Bunny, or little Bunny.

My Jolie is jolie-olie, My Hayden is HG or Bear, and my Isabella is bella-boo.
They all get called 'pumpkin pie' for some reason~

Margot is just a doll - her outfit is dreamy~

I call my children variations on their middle names. Ezra, Mozelle (often Mozette or Mozie) and Sateer (often Soterios).

My family doesn't really have any but my husbands - oy! they have THE craziest nicknames. rooster, mucka-mucka-rookie-roo (and they actually use it a lot!) benny-boo-rock.

Don't ask me. They're fun, but just a little odd nicknames.

I would not have thought I was a cute nickname'er, but I've caught myself calling our little daughter "Sweety Peety" a lot lately. Not even close to resembling her real name and there's no reason for it that I can think of except that it just pops out of my mouth. Isn't it the strangest thing?

My daughter's name is Abigail but we call her Beebee...

Blakely said...

My name is Blakely and my grandmother called me Bakey Boo Boo or some times she would shorten it to Bake. My brother's name is T.J. and she called him Tiki Bird after the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disney. I have no idea why she called us these names, but up until the day she died this is what we were called.

What a cutie! She is too adorable!
My grandma used to call me Zalie ("zah-lee" my name is Lisa -- pronounced Leeza in French) or "Mon petit Zale" or "Ma petite reine" (my little queen).
My dad had the most infuriating (and embarrassing) nicknames for me: Bouboulina (bouboule is a way of saying someone is chubby), and boudgigou (a variation on "bout de gigot",little piece of lamb leg...
How are these for creative/crazy nicknames??!

Nicknames are funny things. We call my daughter Chase Chasey-bee for no good reason. :)

We call our son Chets (short for "cachetes" which is big cheeks in Spanish) we never call him that but when we talk about him that's what we call him. Then we call my daughter Pis-pis (from 'puspa' which is slang for 'coquettish' in Spanish)and lately I've been calling her Chis(because it rhymes with pis and sometimes my husband calls her Chis-pis) which in turn degenerated into me calling her Chispa (which means 'spark' and it seems very befitting to her.)It's a miracle they respond to their real names which are very plain and simple: Tino and Mila.

My oldest, Trevor was T or Bunny (I have no idea why that was). My second son, Andrew was (still is) Roo. My daughter Mabel (almost 2) has always been Moo.

They'll all hate me. :)

I have thought of this very phenomenon lately as we have all taken to calling our 1 year old Alexander, Allie, because that's what our two year old calls him. I am sometimes reminded by someone new to the nickname that it's a girls nickname, that's what I first thought when she started calling him Allie, but now we all call him that -- or Allie Bub which is another of her creations. The two years olds name is Sophie and she has all sorts of crazy names that I never would have imagined that we'd call her such as Mophers & Moph, which I think somehow came from Muffin.

Margot is beautiful!

Keira is "Kiki," Kainoa (pronounced Ky-noah) is "Kaikai," and now we have Kalei (pronounced Kah-lay) but we can't call her "Kaka!" Any ideas welcome!

My sweet mother, of all people, started calling our littlest girl baby "Maisinator"...Her given name is Maisy and we live in California. Go figure.
My older daughter got called "Lucifer" as the "Luci" are part of her first name and the "fer" part of her last name.
I'm hoping neither of them grow up to resemble evil doing male figures of world renown!

Cute Buddha baby!

Hmm...so many nicknames to share!

I was Petunia, Roundhead, Elah...
My brother was Melon and Mancub...
My sister was Beebs, Tweedles, the Babe, Baby, Pickle-face...

My husband is Boo.

Which, naturally, makes me Mrs. Boo.

I don't know why but I started calling my daughter Isla (her first name) Bing! Then it turned into Bing Bing. She's almost three and we still call her that.

Had so much fun reading all the posts :) Me and my husband used to give a whole menagerie of fruit and vegetable associated names to our kids as expressions of affection. Of course, we also had ones for the times our affections were blurred by you know what - thus: The Prince of Pooed Diapers and Princess Smelly Pants.

Hurray for the Quarterly!!!Just received it - found a cozy spot and devoured it. So good.

She is beautiful! I love that wary, alert expression on her face -- Hazel gets that expression, too.

Isaac (who also goes by Ike) was froggy-boy when he was tiny (and had long skinny limbs and startled very easyily,) and I still sometimes call him Ikey-tyke and Zicky-Zacky (which means smart-delicious in Arabic.)

Mabel: Mabes, Mabesy-babesy, and Maybelline

Rose: Rosie-posie, Rose-doze, Roser-dozer

Henry: I could never decide between Hal, Hank, or Harry (I love all of those,) so he mostly just goes by Henry. Also cutie-pie, sweetie, little friend, buddy -- all the usual terms of endearment. I think I sometimes also call him Henry-benry.

Hazel: Haze, Hazy, Hazel-bazel. (Can you tell we fall back on the rhyming thing a lot?)

Also, all of our babies get called "little lert" because they're alert (a lert.) (Dean started this but we all use it.)

We have D, Lolo (what D called Lauren when she was born b/c he couldn't say it) and Chubba Bubba, if you T then no explanation needed and if you don't a picture would clear it all up!

Our youngest is named Sophie, but her sister calls her Sofa. The funny thing is that when we were considering names during my pregnancy, my husband made it his job to come up with possible nicknames to make sure it wasn't going to be anything awful. Sofa isn't the worst thing ever, but we never thought of that one. The best nickname ironically is the one my in-laws called my husband when he was a baby (I'm so glad they don't blog) "pooey little rooey".

m'appelle “mamounette“
Gros bisous à “Buddha baby” ♥
Belle journée :) xo

we called our now two year old, JuJube... but that has since changed to NaNa's.. I have no idea how that happened! LOL. your little one is ADORABLE!!! my little Lady had chubby cheeks as well.. how fast they grow! :(

We do have funny sweet names for our loved ones...your Margot is very lovely. On a more serior note and I do not mean to put a dampener on your comments' page but I feel quite strongly regarding using the name of Buddha. I am certain that you did not mean any malice when you descrived your baby as "the Buddha baby" because she is chubby cheeked, sweet and peaceful looking, but the name Buddha (akin to the name Jesus, God and Alla) is a name of a god that people often use frivolously. I get quite irritated that the name of Buddha is used with out respectful reference. I apologise if this comment has caused any ill feelings. I am a buddhist and find it strange that Buddha's name is so often used in such a prosaic manner.

I was actually just thinking about this subject this afternoon while rocking my 'lady lids' to sleep. her sister 'oni-bologna' was finally sleeping after singing at the top of her voice and the brothers 'wes mess' and 'ee-bee' were quietly watching a movie in my room. it was a quiet and very peaceful afternoon. i love all my little 'sweets'.

your lil one is so adorable!! congratulations again on her arrival and on the arrival of your first quarterly!

we have one child, whom we fevered over finding an original name for as her parents are sadly named Michael and Jennifer (the top names in the late sixties/early 70's)

We decided on Riona Mahre (Ree-o-na Marie). She's been called Nona, Noners, and my favorite, Riona Bolonga (and when i call her this, she replies "Mama Obama".) When she was 1.5 - 2 years and parroting everything we said, we called her Repeat. :o)

The best nickname we've gotten out of our experience with her so far is her's for my mom. Instead of "Grandma", my daughter calls my mom "Achoo". When she was very little--9 months old--my mom would play a game with Nona: everytime my mom said "Achoo", Nona would giggle uncontrollably. Somehow, she associated "Achoo" as being my mom's name and it's stuck ever since. My daughter and her grandpa even conspired to get my mom personalised plates with her nickname on them. :o)

Have fun watching your lil' one develope over the next few months--plenty of nicknames for her to follow then, for sure!

What a sweetheart! We called my daughter Buddha baby too... but she was rounder!! Actually her nickname is Leenie (Caroline... Caroleenie, Caroleenie Lou... Leenie Lou...Leenie). People always ask but I seldomly go through the explanation!! ;)

We started calling our son Beeper because he was a terrible sleeper and my husband always said our son was "beeping instead of sleeping"--and this name has since evolved into the name of my plushie making business: Beeper Bebe.

Today we call him Juni mostly (his name is Julian)--whcih came about because one of his little friends could not say his name correcly (when they were two) and called him Juni--and it really is the main name we call him today.

I have a classmate whose real name is "Clete". His family calls him by the nick name of "Torio", "Torz" or "Torix". We like to call him "Cle-torix" at times.
