You guys are awesome!! Look, here's a big list of all the great titles and series that you guys came up with. I tried to divide it loosely into genre but forgive me - some books really fall into more than one category, or defy category completely. There are just SO many great books out there - it's great to get tried and true recommendations. (I'll keep adding your suggestions to this list - could you, if you leave a comment with one or two, give me the author as well?)

Oh my word. I'm so sorry I left you that long list of books with no authors. That wasn't very nice of me. I do apologize. The list you've compiled is awesome, however. Thanks for putting it together!
Not sure if your kids are too old for these, but have they read the Clarice Bean novels by Lauren Child (not the same as the Clarice Bean picture books). Great to read aloud. Utterly Me, Clarice Bean. Clarice Bean Spells Trouble. Clarice Bean, Don't Look Now.
Thanks Lynne, for taking the time to post the list...perfect for spring break and then summer holiday.
Thanks for the compilation!
Lia - no worries! Thank you for taking the time to think of suggestions!!
What a list! Have you read them all Lynne?
m - no, there are a lot on here that are new to me. can't wait.
Oh! Thank you so much for doing this! I will refer back often. There are so many in here that I love but have forgotten about. Another good place to find stories is vintage school readers from the thrift store. I just found an armload at mine!

So many good books listed! I want to now make sure we have all of them so as my daughter gets older we can read them. I'd also like to add "There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom" by Louis Sachar. He also wrote "Holes" and the "Sideways Stories from Wayside School" books, but "There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom" is my favorite.
Also The Trumpet of the Swan by EB White, and the Frog and Toad series by Arnold Lobel.
This looks like a great list...I'm sure I'll come back to it often!
just a quick correction...the Betsy-Tacy books (a *great* set!) were written by Maud Hart Lovelace [She's from Minnesota, I'm from Minnesota... these books are near and dear to my heart :)]. The original couple were _illustrated_ by Lois Lenski.
This is a great list! For fans of Honey for a Child's Heart [like me], she has a blog by the same name. :)
I love Sideways Stories from Wayside School. I was surprised no one recommended any of Shel Silverstein's books. A Light in the Attic, Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Giving Tree, Falling Up. I know they're mostly poems, but we love reading 5-6 at night and giggling.
I love le Petit Prince,d'Antoine de Saint-Exupery! There is a lot of books that i discover from your list, and i will have a look at them :)
Lynne, I'm so glad you did this post. We have been looking for new books to read together.. this should keep us busy for a while. I have a must read, "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane." We LOVED it!
I'll echo my love for "Frog and Toad" and "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane." A great author for young kids is Judith Viorst. She has a knack for writing stories that are absolutely meant to be read aloud.
As a grade schooler, I had a minor obsession with Lucile Morrison's Lost Queen of Egypt. It's a great read about a child growing up to be queen, full of detail about daily life in Egypt. For years all I could remember of this book was the cover and the illustrations (they're lovely) and how much I adored this book. Now I find that thousands like me were in the same boat. It's out of print but copies are still available, I highly recommend it.
Thank you so much! I was trying to do this on my own, and was totally defeated. My 6 year old is ecstatic, and has started a library list!
Oh this is so funny! We were blogging about the same thing at the same time! I just checked your blog for the first time in a few weeks (I don't get to read blogs much right now!) and I was making the same list too! Great minds think alike! Compare lists if you want...it was so great to read yours too:) Great post!

Great list. I am currently reading 'Alice in Wonderland myself'.
Thanks for putting it together:)
We love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, especially on CD read by Eric Idle. The way he reads it is so funny! We are listening to the sequel--Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator--right now in the car as we go to school and lessons. We are loving it so far too!
if you can ever find a copy the Gerald Durell's Talking Parcel (also known as the Battle for Cockatrice Castle) is fantastic and also The Brothers Lionheart, by Astrid Lindgren. My boys also love Cressida Cowell: How to train your Dragon.
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (sp?). Heidi (I can't recall the author just now) and Peter Pan by Sir James M. Barrie. All lovely.
The list you've compiled is awesome, however. Thanks for putting it together!

Wow shoe series.
Noel Streatfeild1 was the author of fiction and non-fiction, for children and adults. Some of her most famous books, however, were the 11 juvenile novels that are now known as the 'Shoes' books, as they all have the word 'Shoes' in the title. Incidentally, only the first two 'Shoes' books began their publishing existence with the word 'Shoes' in the title - for the other books, the titles were changed in later editions to make the books appear as a series2.
