coat fun, and who's making our day

Making this coat for the 4 year old was the bane of my existence for about a month, around Christmas. I found an old pattern from 1950 and discovered while making it that some of the sewing vocabulary (of which my knowledge is sketchy, anyway) has changed in the last 60 years, as well as the kinds of interfacing that people use. Consequently I had to hand-sew the lining in, which took FOREVER, and it still doesn't drape right. But thanks to the red polka-dots and soft blue fabric, my daughter will actually wear it. Phew.

Melissa and I also want to thank Joslyn for giving sugar city journal a fun little notice, a "you make my day" award. So nice, Joslyn! Melissa and I love your blog - you have such thoughtful observations about all kinds of things (and a hilarious story about an encounter between the 4 year old in your life and Jessica Simpson at a store). Joslyn asked us to keep the love flowing... so we are passing the
awards along to 5 blogs that make OUR day: stephmodo, erika's lovely little picture of english life here, wise and kind jessica , artistic bethany , and the brilliant fanja. I should say, though, that all of the blogs we read make our day! It is so amazing to get these tiny little peeks into the lives of all you amazing women. We love this!! (By the way, now you award winners get to pick your 5 "you make my day" blogs...)

This jacket is so cute!! I LOVE those buttons! I don't know what you're talking about-- it looks like it's draping right to me! Thank you for your kind comment and award too! I don't feel like I deserve it... you two are so much more artistic! The best thing about awards is hearing about other great blogs... more to inspire me :) You both make my day!

Looks adorable from this vantage point, Lynne - the buttons would make any girl, little or big, smile! Good for you for trying out old patterns -- I have collected so many, but I never get around to using them!

Lynne, that is the most charming and beautiful girl's coat ever! I love the grey contrasted with the cheerful buttons. The orange chair in the background is simply perfect as well. Bravo!!!

Oh my goodness, Lynne! That is such a cute coat and the colors look great together. I'm sure you've got one happy little lady on your hands. I love old patterns--the style is so nice.
I have to say that when I saw that you had made this, I went straight downstairs, pulled out my own stack of old patterns and cut out a little dress for Annabel. Thank you for the inspiration! Now let's see if I will actually finish it :)

Lynne, I love those buttons. You are quite ambitious to make a coat. The thought of sewing anything that needs a lining makes my head swoon. It turned out lovely.

too cute! what wonderful fabric choices and the ginormous buttons are awesome. I hear you on the vintage patterns. I have so many but are terrified by them!

What a cute coat. I've done tons of children's sewing myself and its nice when they love them.

Thanks for putting on the blog awards. Always fun to find a new place to blog hop to. It is amazing to see other people's lives. A little inspiration and a lot of gratitude!

That orange chair in the back ground just stopped my heart with its orange damask orangeness. It's a combination of some of my very favorite things.
I don't mean to make more of the background than the foreground. The coat is wonderful as well. The copy-cat in me is beginning to purr.
