the gps dress

This dress could change the world. The idea came from all those gps-obsessed husbands and fathers. How many of you have one? My niece, the brilliant seamstress, recently drove to my house from Philadelphia. Her husband had insisted that she bring the gps. And as she anticipated, the gps only brought confusion and disorder as it led her across the most obtrusive roads.

Ever since my husband bought a gps, he carries it in his pocket. I'm glad that I can rely on him at any given moment to tell me his coordinates on this big round earth. I was thinking that this could be really useful for children. So I designed this little dress with a special gps microchip imbedded in the back pocket. Now I can know where my daughter is at any given moment. She takes a step to the right, and I know where she is. She takes a step to the left, and I know where she is.

I think life would have been different for all those little wandering forest girls--Gretel, Goldy Locks, the babes in the woods--who were perpetually lost, if only their mothers had dressed them in a gps dress....

i love it, melissa!! and does little j have a big "J" embroidered on her cute little bum?

Amazing. Seriously amazing.

(My husband is into his GPS, for geocaching, and even bought me a unit for Mother's Day. I can get lost quite easily and I discovered it's great for finding flea markets and thrift stores. Probably not what he had in mind.)

I have one of those husbands too! He wanted to attach a gps to the wrist of our little girl when she was born. I put my foot down and said no. Where could a one-week old possibly go?? I suppose he was terrified that someone might steal her...

Love the dress -- brilliant as usual!

Great dress - cute story! :) Thanks for the mid-afternoon boost!

I own a gps and I'm so fond of it - don't have it on me always, though. Lovely little dress, beautiful fabric. However, my daughters are not going to be carrying gps's anytime soon! :) Thanks for the laugh!

what is it with men and the gps...my husband is addicted to his.
but on the upside it sure inspired some darling dresses!

Arr the GPS! Even when I know the route off by heart my husband insists on using the blooming GPS! As its inbuilt, I can't remove it from the vehicle but at lest I can turn it off...
Very adorable dress and bloomers - and yes, if only those little girls had them in the stories. And perhaps Little Bo-Peep could have benefited from GPS collars for her sheep...

can you wash the microchip? Or did you make it removeable? I'm curious how that would work once she got her dress dirty...

So beautiful! The dress that is. I still think GPS needs a little work before I bought one. Ever see the Office episode where they drove into a lake?

That dress is adorable :o) I love the tan trim on the neck and sleeves. I can even see an adult version of it being very cute...as a shirt. I haven't gotten into the gps thing, but actually.... I can see myself getting one if I buy a car someday.

Love it!

I thought real men could pinpoint their global position with the stars and moons. Like Bear Grylls

The bloomers are my favorite part, and the trim, and the color scheme. It's so hard to pick just one favorite.

thank heavens my hubby has a killer internal GPS. seriously, he's better than those stupid things. we'll never have one. Love the contrasting trim on this one.
Any chance you are willing to share the pattern for the top? or did you make it up?

I would give just about anything if you'd share (or sell) the pattern for that set. It's absolutely gorgeous.

I must be having a blonde moment, but did you really put a gps chip in her back pocket?? That is brilliant. I have a navi system and just let me say that I don't get lost anymore. I can still make a wrong turn if I don't listen carefully but it has helped immensely. When a road isn't on it, I'm lost!

Adorable. Now I need you to make little GPS pockets and pouches for all of my little easy to loose items, like keys phones etc!

Sigh. If I had a child tottering around my house in clothes this lovely, my life would be complete! But seriously, this is lovely. What is that fabric? I need a dress for myself in that print!

That is the cutest dress! And she is a doll!

Ahh the GPS. Source of many a spat in our car. Why follow a road map, when you can just follow an arrow, as the crow flies?! Lovely little outfit.

Oh your darling is just adorable! And to have 3 of her! What a treat! That fabric is wonderful!

I tell you: you would L O V E your GPS if you were into Geocaching (treasure-hunting with a gps!) yourself - maybe you should have a look at geocaching.com to see where all the treasures are around your neighborhood!!! (;
