The knitting continues... specifically, the quest to finish the perfect present for baby Margot, who hopefully slept really well last night?

The thing I love about knitting is how portable it is. Knit while the kids are playing in a friend's driveway; knit while you're riding in the car talking to the handsome man driving; unwind the huge knotted mass of string you accidentally made while having a meeting. Who knew this was such a great hobby? It's just what I need these days.

to rock or not to rock?

As is customary with new babies, dear sweet Margot has her nights and days mixed up. She would sleep all day without awaking to eat if I'd let her. At night she sleeps in short spurts, and grunts and fusses between time. I find myself reaching my arm out and rocking her cradle during much of the night. My girlfriend says she'll become too dependent on the rocking motion in order to sleep. What do you all think? Do you have any good advice for training a baby to be a good sleeper?

she's here!

After a bit of a scary delivery which involved a lot of blood loss and a c-section, little Margot has arrived! Thank you for all your well wishes. I will be on maternity leave from the blog for a time time enjoying this sweet little baby...

Balloons for Melissa and little baby!

Hey! Guess what? Melissa had a lovely baby GIRL (although the Dr. mistakenly yelled out "boy" first - turning a surprise into a really extra-dramatic surprise) on Sunday afternoon. 8 pounds, 5 ounces. Mother and baby are doing great.

I am over the moon and of course dying to see my new niece...

a story about my new hobby

I just completed my first knitting project that is not an ill-shaped, hole-ridden rectangle. Instead it's an ill-shaped, hole-ridden baby sweater, made from the Baby Surprise pattern by Elizabeth Zimmerman that I read about over on the Purl Bee. Mine does not quite look like Whit's or the picture on my DVD cover (I had to order the dvd that goes with the pattern - I am too much of a visual learner to have ever figured out anything beyond the basic garter stitch without seeing someone actually do it. Over and over and over. My poor family). I have no idea what happened to the collar on mine, or the three inches on either side of the front where there are supposed to be buttons and button-holes. But who cares!! I'm just excited that me and my sore knitting fingers (see below)

(OK, so you can't actually tell from this picture how sore they are. But at one point I really did get a knitting needle blister) actually finished. And dang it, I'm starting a new one tonight. New babies I know, watch out.

fly, fly, Sugar City Quarterly!

Maybe it's an attempt to slow down a bit, in a world where much is hastily done, often sloppily and without thought. A sort of anti-blog--even though we love blogs!--where the average attention span lasts for one minute, then alley-oop: new link, new image, new thought, new blog. We miss the pleasure of slowly performing an activity and doing it well: making a perfect batch of bread from a slow-rising starter that rests and rises for a whole day; knitting a sweater patiently, bit by bit over the course of a winter; reading a long Russian novel; looking up unknown words in the dictionary, pondering the book in off-reading hours... We thought an old-fashioned-ish sort of quarterly, with thoughtful articles, simple ink sketches, interspersed with pretty photographs, sewing ideas and patterns, sans annoying advertisements, might bring a bit more contemplative calm to our harried lives. Instead of bending over a computer with an achy neck to read from an articifically lit screen, we can hold the pages of the quarterly in our hands, snuggle up on a cozy sofa and read and think, uninterrupted and peacefully. Within the next few weeks the first issue will be published. The theme: the magic of story books.

P.S. the pattern for the little outfit is the storytime button-over, designed last year.

white ruffle collar dress

Awhile back I made a version of the servant frock in grey, with a ruffled collar. I said at the time that I'd write up how I did the collar and then promptly forgot. Oh, my empty promises! But with spring in sight and the need for a new dress for my wild one (if you doubt my choice of adjectives, please look below) I finally am following through. Here's the link (and the caveat that this is just how I happen to do it. There are surely other ways that might be better -).

feeling rather ponderous

It's evening. I'm eight months pregnant and feeling rather large and uncomfortable. I sit upon the five-year-old's bed to take a rest. Though my excessive weight bears upon it rather awkwardly. Crack...the wooden bed breaks in half. We laugh and laugh at this one... Do any of you have any funny pregnancy stories?
