backyard field guide

One of my favorite parts of Crossing to Safety is the description of how Charity's mother, Aunt Emily, orchestrated summer for her children when they'd go off into the woods for summer:

"Aunt Emily believes in the freedom of summer. She doesn't much care what the children do so long as they do something, and know what they are doing. It is idleness and randomness of mind that she cannot abide. When the children go on a hike, she packs bird and flower guides in their knapsacks, and quizzes them on their return to see if they have learned anything. When she accompanies them on an overnight camping trip, sleeping in her own worn pup tent, they can count on instructive fireside talks on the stars. And on rainy days such as this she sits like a confident spider in the midst of her web until boredom drives all the children on the Point to her porch, where she reads to them or teaches them French..."

So brilliant, and so how I wish I was more like as a mother - wish being the operative word in that sentence (I seem to spend my time engaged in activities like fishing gum from the jaws of the dog rather than reading Hiawatha to my children). But we did have a brief Aunt Emily moment yesterday afternoon, after I came across the idea on this great-but-now-defunct blog. The plan is to start with our small yard and then move on to our street. Then we will probably have lost all interest but hey, for now it's a fantastic plan and one that will keep us busy this Thanksgiving week.

Happy Thanksgiving!

double luck

Lynne sent me two amazing packages last week. Along with many other beautiful surprises, there were two beautiful handmade linoleum-cut prints on heavy textured paper. She also made this stylish little dress with its two pretty buttons on a white squared yoke. It is made of a heavy woven fabric that should wear really well. Everything was packaged so beautifully; it made my day. Talk about luck!

the pensive one

Here's a painting that I've been working on for some time now. I started it at the beginning of the summer and slowly, slowly worked on it until it was completed. The bird is a Baltimore Oriole, a male. He is staring off into the countryside (inspired by an amazing painting I found in SOHO). The nest holds three little blue eggs. The bird is positioned near the edge of the painting as if he is posed to move right out of the picture plane, suggesting an indifference to the nest, perhaps. Though his proximity does suggest some sort of connection.
I LOVE the frame. It's an antique inherited from my kind mother-in-law. It's the sort of frame that elevates anything held within its edges. A scribble painting would look lovely in it, I think.

some boudoir cheer

Since I've been visiting my parents, I've been working on some colorful little paintings to brighten up my mom's room, which she jokingly calls "the boudoir." This is a very functional, multipurpose room--study, craft room, sewing room, t.v. room and now even napping room. (This is my favorite room to work in as well. At the moment, my sewing, painting and other projects are strewn across the tables.) The walls in this multifunction room are white, the carpet beige, and there is no decoration or ornamentation. My mom says: "I'm beyond all of that; what I want is function." Though still the same, it doesn't hurt to add a little cheer on the walls. When I finish all the pictures, I'll have to post them hanging on the walls of the very practical and now beautiful boudoir!

P.S. I can't wait to find out what Lynne's mysterious creation is.

Chinatown and Soho

We love walking through Chinatown on Saturday afternoons, and working our way up through Soho. We visit the non-touristy side of Chinatown, south of Canal Street, closer to the Manhattan Bridge. There are always interesting and sometimes quite disgusting sites and smells. These fish were something else; we could smell them a block away.

I found this lovely old landscape at Cath Kidston (www.cathkidston.co.uk). Apparently all the stores in the US are closing, so I got this painting for a steal! It's an original, probably from the fifties. It's even more lovely in real life. The colors are bright and painterly. From a distance, it glows. I find myself continually peeking my head into the living room so I can look at it. What a find!

I love Lynne's purses. I'm putting in my order for one!

bird shirt/onesie

my friend cheryl was nice enough to sell me some child t's and onesies at wholesale prices (she has a very great toy/embroidery business. check her out at www.wokits.com) and nice enough to share her booth with me at an upcoming craft fair this weekend. so i've been making shirts printed with this bird design. i think it will be fun to try and sell a few things. i am also planning on making some little prints that would be nice for a child's room. we'll see if i actually get around to it!

spring blossoms

I loved Lynne's bird print and leaf print. We are all about the earth and nature these days, aren't we! A few days ago the tree in front of our house was dressed in its full array of fluffy, white blossoms. It was enchanting to watch my girls play in them. So I decided to paint this scene. This is a watercolor on 9x12 cold press paper. I think it looks better in real life, as it is fairly small and meant to be seen close up.

my press

i just got an inexpensive little press for linoleum block printing. even though i have only had a chance to steal an hour or two with it i can tell it will be an obsession. the moment after you press when you are lifting up your block to see what the image looks like - such a feeling. here's my first fledgling attempt - a bird on a branch - and then a little corner from my home.

Allyson's AMAZING pictures!!

Allyson sent me these incredible pictures for us to post. They left me sitting at my computer staring at the clarity even through a crying baby... Our world is so amazingly beautiful. Thanks, Allyson, for capturing that. You have such a great eye.

Branch Painting

here is an old painting i did, maybe 4 years ago. i'm posting it because when i was recently at melissa's house i saw a branch painting she'd done that was oddly enough incredibly similar to mine! so here it is, melissa. we think a lot alike!

the yellow stranger

I added the third bird to my painting. Though I think he looks too estranged from the group. I may try again.

Emily's Nature Painting

Wow!! Our amazing cousin Emily sent in a picture of this painting she made -- it is beautiful!!! I love the colors, and the texture on the trunks of those trees is so, so lovely. Here is what Emily says about her art:

"OK, when I got your email, it just so happened that I had just finished this painting to go over our mantle. I hadn't been able to
find something I liked, so I just decided to make something. It's supposed to be a row of trees. Clearly I don't go for "realism". Bruce came down and said, "Wow! Lollipops!" I still don't know if it's what I want, but it's what we have for now! I'm having a shower at my house tomorrow night, so i had to put something there!"

Emily, you are GREAT!! I LOVE IT!

mother bird

Here's the latest painting I"m working on. I love long, horizontal paintings, so I stretched this canvas myself. It's 33 by 13 inches. I may add two more birds higher up on the branch, or I may remove the father bird and leave only the mother and her two babies. Last night at dinner the kids had a great time pretending like their spaghetti was worms. Yum!
